Dental Bridges & Dental Crowns – Bison Dentistry

Our first line of treatment for a cavity is a filling. However, if the cavity is very large and deep into the tooth it may require more treatment than just a filling. In theses cases the tooth may require a dental crown or cap.

Bison Dentistry in Tonawanda perform dental crowns when necessary. Dental crowns can replace a large amount of missing tooth structure due to a fracture, broken tooth, damage, and decay. At Bison Dentistry, dental crowns are customized for each individual person's tooth. Call us today at (716) 696-1951 to get your tooth checked out today. Whether you need a crown, bridge, or cavity filling, Bison Dentistry has got you covered!

Dental Crowns Explained

According to the American College of prosthodontists, the most common dental restoration is a single dental crown. A variety of treatment situations can require a dental crown. Crowns can protect damaged teeth, cover large fillings due to cavities. Crowns typically protect teeth treated with a root canal. Dentists work with their local lab to create a custom crown that will fit the best and feel like a natural tooth. The dental crowns at Bison Dentistry are crafted using the latest technology and the highest quality materials to ensure a comfortable fit and long-lasting durability.

How Dental Bridges Work with Dental Crowns

If a patient is missing a tooth that is between other teeth, a dental bridge may be a treatment choice. A dental bridge requires the dentist to place a crown on the adjacent teeth next to the missing tooth and to attach them with a fake tooth which will fill the gap. The dental bridges at  Bison Dentistry are recommended for patients who are missing one or more teeth and are looking for a long-lasting and natural-looking solution to restore their smile and oral function.

Why Patients Get a Dental Crown

Patients who choose to get a dental crown  avoid further damage or decay to an existing tooth and restore their smile. Missing teeth can lead to additional oral health problems and more expensive dental treatment. You can avoid this hassle by getting a tooth crown here at Bison Dentistry. Our dental crowns can help prevent tooth loss and maintain your natural dentition. Crowns can help maintain your normal bite as well as change the positioning of the teeth to a more ideal bite.

Receiving a Dental Crown Step-by-Step

It takes two appointments for a patient to receive their tooth crown at Bison Dentistry. This is the step-by-step process for having a crown completed:

  • Before the crown. Any infection or cavity must be addressed or filled prior to starting the crown. Old crowns need to be removed.
  • Next, the dentist will prepare the tooth for the crown. This requires the dentist to remove some of the enamel to make space for the crown to go over the top. The patient will receive a temporary crown at the end of the appointment.
  • Crown Delivery. Once the crown is back from the lab, it’s ready for delivery. The patient must return to the office in order for the dentist to deliver this new crown. The dentist will make sure the new crown fits well and the patient is happy. If the patient is happy and the crown fits well, the dentist will use dental cement to attach the crown to the tooth permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

During preparation, the dentist may numb the area for the patient's comfort. After fitting, patients may have a little soreness in the area where the crown sits for a few days. Pain that continues well after the crown fitting may indicate a poor fit, which requires a return visit for an adjustment.
Most dental crowns look just like the rest of the natural teeth. Dentists work to help patients select a natural-looking shade for the new dental crown that matches the other teeth. Today's dental crowns are indistinguishable from permanent teeth.
Dental crowns need replacement over time. The crown's material and the patient's oral health may determine how often they will need replacement. On average, it takes five to 15 years before crowns require replacement.
Patients should discuss dental crown options with their insurance provider to see if crowns are covered. Crowns that are part of a treatment plan, such as tooth decay repair, may have a higher likelihood of insurance coverage. The choice of material for the crown also influences the cost.
The length of the dental crown treatment is dependent on several factors. Crowns that are part of a root canal or another intensive treatment may take longer because of the other steps in the procedure. Talk to the dentist to get an idea about how long the crown process will take.
Patients may have other options besides dental crowns, depending on their case and situation. For some patients, a filling, inlay, or onlay may be sufficient to restore the tooth. Pulling the tooth may also be a viable alternative to a dental crown.
